Carbon Di-oxide Injection

Plants require 3 ingredients to flourish.. Light, fertilizer and CO2 and will grow at the rate supported by whichever of the 3 is least. The law of minimum applies here. Usually the light and fertilizer are O.K. or are looked into by the hobbyist, but very little attention is paid to CO2 (what plants take in when they are photosynthesizing). So how does one provide this ingredient?? The simplest way would be to hook up a CO2 cylinder with a control valve and presto … CO2 injection! This, though the best is also the most expensive, but those who don’t have those Big Bucks need not despair … Read on:

Generator: A Coke/Pepsi 1.5 lt. Plastic bottle with a hole in the cap with an air tube fitted is used. It is filled with 1 cup of sugar and warm water aprox. 1lt. is added. To this add ½ teaspoonful of bakers yeast. Within 24 hrs. CO2 will be produced as the solution ferments. The air tube coming out of the cap can be inserted into the aquarium and soon bubbles will soon rise. This should last for about 7to 10 days. Start a new one before this one goes to keep the CO2 going.

It is dangerous to try and control the flow of CO2, if out-put is restricted there is every possibility of pressure building up and the bottle exploding! leaving you with a big mess to clean up.
